The Cloud9 Roofing team recently completed a ventilation and skylight upgrade for a happy customer in Seaforth, delivering practical solutions to improve airflow and lighting in their home. The job involved installing two whirlybirds and replacing an existing plastic skylight above a bathroom with a high-quality, vented Skydome unit.
Whirlybirds are roof ventilation devices designed to improve airflow in your home or building. They work by using wind to spin a turbine, which creates a vacuum effect that draws hot, stale air out of the roof cavity. This helps to:
Reduce heat buildup in the roof space, especially during summer
Lower cooling costs by assisting air conditioning systems
Prevent moisture buildup, reducing the risk of mould and mildew
Improve overall air circulation and indoor comfort
They are wind-powered and operate without electricity, making them an energy-efficient and low-maintenance solution.
Domed skylights are roof-mounted windows designed to bring natural light into indoor spaces. The dome shape allows light to enter from multiple angles, even when the sun is low in the sky. Key benefits include:
Increased natural light, reducing the need for artificial lighting
Improved ambience and visibility in rooms like bathrooms, hallways, or kitchens
Optional ventilation features (like vented frames) help reduce humidity and improve airflow
Energy efficiency, by making better use of daylight
Aesthetic enhancement, adding a modern touch to your roofline
Domed skylights are often made with durable, UV-resistant acrylic or polycarbonate, and come in options like opaque or tinted finishes to diffuse light and maintain privacy.
So for the first part of this project, our Cloud9 Roofing team supplied and installed two whirlybirds to selected areas of the roof. As mentioned above, roof ventilators are a simple yet highly effective way to reduce heat build-up in the roof cavity. Especially during warmer months, whirlybirds help expel hot air, making the home more comfortable and energy-efficient.
The second part of the job involved replacing an old plastic skylight with a new Skydome skylight featuring vented frames, tailored for a tiled roof. The homeowner chose an opaque tinted dome to match the existing roof aesthetics while allowing soft, diffused natural light to filter into the bathroom. This new installation not only brightens the space but also includes ventilation to help control moisture and humidity—a perfect solution for a bathroom environment.
